In the sixth century, the emperor Justinian built the great domed Church of Holy Wisdom in Constantinople. This attracted many talented artisans in metalwork, enameling and mosaics. A period of exuberant productivity of Christian imagery burst forth. This stunning Cross (1 1/2" L) is based on  a 6th century Byzantine pectoral Cross reflecting Roman influences. In sterling silver set with five cabochon garnets and suspended on a 16 1/4" L matching garnet strand.
